Where do I begin to tell the story of how great love can be; the sweet love story, though not as old as the sea? It was only in the year 2006 that Ch. Sai Aditya, a batchmate and roommate of mine in the hostel, literally kicked me to audition for the university brass band.
I had learnt a bit of Indian classical music like almost every Bengali does, but had no exposure to western music. I was first surprised to be selected in the band and later scared to see the instrument assigned to me. I was assigned the tuba which weighed 10 kgs. It was indeed huge. There started a beautiful ride wherein I discovered facets of mine which I otherwise would not have.
The first shock for me was the fact that I experienced physical fitness which I had not experienced before. I was able to march and play the tuba decently!!! The second one – I was taught some basics of chords and asked to orchestrate pieces for the band. Thanks to my seniors KG and Natesh I realized that I actually had a bit of a creative side to me. The third and the one that shocked me the most was the ability to conduct practice sessions. I had a terrible fear for facing an audience and speaking. One day I was told that I was a senior member of the band and I should conduct the practice session for that day. FYI, it is a band comprising 37 members.
Yes, the band does music, but it also lets individuals rediscover themselves. I have, like I have mentioned earlier. I am sure everybody in the band has and all the future members will. Rhythmic Energy touches and transforms all who take the first step and make the cut into the band. It not only enriches one musically, but also as a human being
